Don’t Be a SERP Serf. Be a King or Queen with eCommerce SEO.

DynamicWeb

If you need a primer on Feudalism, we don’t blame you. You probably haven’t studied the social systems of medieval Europe since that one time you got lost on Wikipedia for the entire month of August.

Of course, we’re not talking about how you feud with your eCommerce competition… but the division of kings and peasants actually has a strong analogy in modern e-business.

Feudalism was all about real estate – who owned the land and who didn’t own the land.  The kings and aristocrats?  They had it.  The serfs?  They didn’t.

So what is real estate in the eCommerce and e-business world?  Where is the land?  When your potential customers enter relevant keywords into search engines, they are presented with a SERP, or a Search Engine Results Page.

SERPs are where the land is.  You want to use SEO best practices to show up on SERPs, and not only that, you want to get on that first results page.

There’s an old joke (at least as long as the Internet existed): “If you want to rob a bank, hide the money on the second search page.  Because nobody will find it.”

If you don’t have good real estate on the results pages, you are a SERP serf.  And what happens to a business that is a SERP serf?  Without a presence on the top search engine pages, it becomes much more difficult for customers to find you through organic search.

And you want customers to find you through organic search!  In fact, the potential customers that arrive to your eCommerce website through search engines are some of your best prospects.  Because they are searching for keywords that are specific to your business, these prospects have already shown interest in topics related to your business.

It might seem that rising up the search rankings is harder than climbing the social ladder in feudal Europe, but it is possible.  With SEO best practices, your eCommerce website has the opportunity to own land on SERPs and attract more customers.

So stay faithful, o wandering knights of eCommerce.
